Your knee is the largest joint in the body and must endure your entire weight. The knee joint serves as a hinge between the thigh bone (femur) and the top of the shinbone (tibia). It is protected by the kneecap (patella) and has a complex system of tendons, muscles and ligaments to aid movement. Because of this, and because the knee is necessary for running, jumping, and other movements, injuries are common.

Some technical knee braces are designed to keep the knee joint in a certain position, either to promote healing or to prevent misalignment during activity. While others can be as simple as a stretchy neoprene sleeve for healing of minor injuries. Meniscus tears, tendon ruptures and fractures can all cause instability in the knee, which can result in limited mobility. By wearing a brace, a person recovering from knee surgery may be able to get around with a cane or a walker instead of having to spend their day in a wheelchair.

Sudden twisting or severe bending can overstretch ligaments, and can even cause tears in the surrounding muscles fibers. If an athlete is prone to knee pain or misalignment, using a knee brace can prevent further injury while allowing them to remain active in their sport of choice. Eventually, the knee can become strong enough to stay properly aligned without the brace, even during strenuous activity.
